Use OpenClaw with Clanker Workspace for Project Research

Connect OpenClaw to Workspace MCP, read a research Project, and save an evidence-backed comparison. Understand how this differs from hosted BYOA.

OpenClaw can be the assistant you use while Clanker Workspace holds the project files it works with. Connect the remote MCP server, authorize access, and ask OpenClaw to read the relevant sources. With editing permission, it can save its work back into a Project for your next decision.

This is useful for supplier research: the brief, proposals, comparison, and unresolved questions can stay together instead of being scattered across chat transcripts.

Connect an existing OpenClaw client

Start with a current OpenClaw installation and sign in to Workspace agent connections. For an operator connecting their own Workspace account, the documented read-access configuration is:

openclaw mcp set clanker '{"url":"https://workspace.clankercloud.ai/mcp","transport":"streamable-http","auth":"oauth","oauth":{"scope":"workspace:read"}}'
openclaw mcp login clanker

Complete the browser authorization and inspect the permissions. These commands configure a server and start login; they do not run the research task. Check OpenClaw's current transport and OAuth documentation for your version.

The ordinary operator login uses shared, operator-managed credentials in OpenClaw. Consider who can use that OpenClaw instance before connecting a Workspace account. Naming one Project in a prompt does not restrict the account-wide Workspace permissions to that Project.

Prepare a supplier research Project

For a fictional example, create Cedar Supplier Review with a purchasing brief, two proposals, and a comparison checklist. Give each source an understandable filename and date. The Agent needs to know which proposal version is current and which criteria the owner actually approved.

Ask OpenClaw:

Find Cedar Supplier Review in my Clanker Workspace. Read the brief, current proposals, and checklist. Compare only the stated terms. For each criterion, identify the source and any missing information. Return the comparison here without modifying files or contacting suppliers.

Read-only access is enough for this trial. Check whether an omitted cancellation term remains unknown and whether proposed delivery dates stay distinguishable from commitments. Use the source-verification guide for your review.

Save a comparison you can reuse

When the first result is useful, approve the editing access needed to save a file. Follow the Workspace permissions guide to request and authorize the additional scope; logging in with the earlier read scope does not grant writes.

Ask for supplier-comparison.md in the same Project. Have it include source filenames, dates, unresolved questions, and a recommendation conditional on those questions. Open the file in Workspace and check it before using it for a purchase decision.

If a write times out, inspect the destination before requesting another write. The vendor comparison starter supplies a fuller review structure.

Choose MCP or BYOA for the next step

This setup lets your existing OpenClaw client call Workspace tools. Registering OpenClaw through BYOA is a separate route, with a supported runtime, Project binding, hosting choices, and its own setup checks. The agent workspace overview explains the distinction.

A remote MCP connection does not create a hosted worker or keep OpenClaw running indefinitely. Regular Workspace Loops, Schedules, and managed email use hosted Workspace Agents rather than native BYOA harnesses. To repeat the supplier review method, build a custom Agent and test the intended trigger separately.

OpenClaw's external model calls stay with its configured provider. Clanker-hosted inference, compute, and paid Tools use Clanker credits at their applicable rates. Review usage when expanding beyond file research.
